The person killed in a fiery car explosion in Queenstown on Tuesday night is believed to be husband and father Kurt Sturgess, police say.
"Overnight the Sturgess family were advised that a car belonging to their beloved son, husband and father, Kurt, had been involved in a fire near Queenstown," police said in a statement.
"Although a formal identification is yet to be completed all indications are that Kurt was in the vehicle. The family is obviously devastated about the loss of Kurt and are assisting police with their inquiries."
Otago Lakes area commander Inspector Olaf Jensen said police and fire were back at Jardine Park, where the car was found, yesterday to determine the cause of the fire.
"While the scene examination is ongoing we cannot speculate on how the fire may have started," he said.
