States of emergency have been declared in Christchurch, Grey District and Buller as Gita lashes New Zealand.
Buller Mayor Garry Howard said the worst of the weather was predicted to hit his district in darkness tonight.
"This is not a good time to be trying to do this safely. Granity in particular has high seas predicted and along with high winds this is not a good situation for those in
seafront properties."
Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel has also declared a state of emergency for Christchurch City, which includes Banks Peninsula, due to the impacts of ex-tropical Cyclone Gita.
Latest forecasts show the region is set for heavy rain and high winds, with potentially serious impacts. Banks Peninsula is expected to bear the brunt of the storm.
