Around 250 cyclists departed Masterton yesterday for Palmerston North for the second stage of the BDO Wellington to Auckland Cycle Challenge.
Masterton Mayor Lyn Paterson was on hand to open the stage, in which riders left from the netball courts in Colombo Rd to head to Palmerston North.
Race spokesmanBryan Teng said the first stage, Wellington to Masterton, on Sunday had involved fog over the Rimutaka Hill.
"I was in the support car and I was going down and kept telling myself, poor cyclists," he said.
The cyclists were to head first to Pahiatua and then ride over the Pahiatua Track.
There were around 150 individual cyclists and approximately 100 more corporate riders in teams of six.
Money raised is to support Multiple Sclerosis sufferers in New Zealand and there is a further $100,000 in prize money for the winning corporate team to donate to the charity of their choice. The challenge started on Sunday and finishes on Saturday, February 15.
