Cyclists get in gear for annual charity fun ride

After 20 years' running the Martinborough Charity Fun Ride, Jan Lankow is ready to call it a day - but husband Geoff is doing his best to change her mind.

The charitable couple are gearing up for another year of the cycling event on October 28, which sees hundreds of serious and not-so-serious cyclists flood into town to tackle the 115km circuit.

The ride raises money for the Martinborough Fire Brigade and the South Wairarapa Order of St John and, during the last 20 years, has made donations of $120,000.

Mr Lankow said although many used it as training for the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge in November, it was a really fun ride and he was amazed at the different shapes and sizes the cyclists came in.

"The more experienced riders do the full 115km circuit out of Martinborough and looping through Gladstone towards Masterton, while recreational riders enjoy the 48km course. They tell us they like the countryside and the variety of country roads."

The ride attracted 900 cyclists at its peak about 10 years ago, and still draws about 600.

Mr Lankow said they never thought they would still be running the race 20 years later, but saw it as an opportunity to put something back into the community and to give cyclists a ride. He also said that although they had some loyal and hard-working volunteers, it was a lot of work and his wife was talking about it being the last race.

"I'm trying to convince my wife we have to carry on. She reckons she's reached a final ride but I'll be having a serious talk with her."

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ride, organisers are giving away a spot prize of a night at Wharekauhau Lodge worth $1800, among other prizes from sponsors.

Register at www.mcfr.org.nz before October 18 to avoid a $20 late fee. Entry fees are $60 for individuals and $90 for tandem. Concessions made for families.
