Cyclists have broken through the cordon set up by police and Transit New Zealand at the Curran Street on-ramp and begun crossing the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Newstalk ZB reported that police were initially able to hold off the crowd of around 2000 people who had gathered near Westhaven Marina hoping to cross the bridge in celebration of its 50th birthday.
A short time ago however, cyclists among the group managed to break through the cordon and make their way on to the bridge.
Newstalk ZB reported that police had given up trying to stop people from crossing the cordon.
It is illegal for people to cross the bridge on foot or by bike without prior permission.
The marchers are hoping to show the Transport Agency and the Government that there is very strong support among Aucklanders for walking and cycling on the bridge.
Spokesman Bevan Woodward says the city is one of the most unfriendly in the developed world for walkers and cyclists.
