A man remains in a critical condition after a car and a group of up to 20 cyclists collided on a busy Auckland waterfront road.
The cyclist, named by media this morning as Auckland civil engineer Greg Paterson, was injured on Tamaki Drive, St Heliers, about 8am yesterday.
An Auckland Hospital spokeswoman said he remained in a critical but stable condition this afternoon.
Three other cyclists were injured in the crash.
The Herald on Sunday said one had broken vertebrae in his neck, broken ribs and facial cuts. A second had a deep gash to the knee and a broken kneecap, while the third had a broken collarbone, shoulder blade and thumb.
Police yesterday said the car allegedly ran a stop sign on the intersection of Tamaki Drive and Cliff Road, striking several of the cyclists.
Police were continuing to talk to witnesses. It was understood charges were being considered against the driver, a woman in her early 20s.
The cyclists were part of a recreational cycling group.
Tamaki Drive is popular with cyclists and vehicle traffic. There are cycle and pedestrian lanes on the footpath but both are relatively narrow and cyclists often avoid it because of the numbers of walkers and runners.
