Cyclist injured in Wanganui crash

A cyclist has been taken to hospital after it is believed he was hit by a car on St John's Hill.

The driver of the car is believed to have fled the scene.

St John's Hill resident Lachie Cromar was in his Great North Road house when he heard a crash and came out to see the injured cyclist lying on the street.

"He was just lying in the gutter," Mr Cromar said.

Several police cars and an ambulance attended the scene and the section of road by the shops was blocked off for traffic heading towards town.

The cyclist, who is in his early 30s, is in a stable condition in Whanganui Hospital.

Meanwhile, in another crash, one person died after a car crashed into the back of a truck and caught fire on Tayforth Road.

Police cordoned off Tayforth Road this morning where the accident happened.

Wanganui Fire senior station officer Gary Wilson confirmed the driver of the car was dead.

He said the driver of the truck was "all right".

Whanganui Police are investigating the crash.

They request that motorists and pedestrians avoid this area.
