The doctor who died after being knocked off his bike by a hit-and-run driver was training for a charity ride aiming to save lives.
Ian Graham Robinson, known as Graham, died on Thursday, the day after he was hit on Peak Rd, near Helensville.
The 62-year-old, who was riding with a North Shore anaesthetist, suffered serious head injuries and never regained consciousness.
Robinson's friends said he was training for a Heart Foundation fundraising ride.
"He was looking forward to it, he was looking at sorting out sponsors," said Lewis King, who worked with Robinson at the Mairangi Medical Centre for 22 years.
His friends set up a fundraising page so people can donate to the ride and fulfil his wish. By last night $865 had been donated.
Police want to hear from the ute driver or anyone with information about the cream or off-white vehicle.
Robinson's death comes just two weeks after four cyclists were seriously injured after they were hit by a car on Auckland's Tamaki Drive.
