Cyclist dies in crash with vehicle at Otaki

A cyclist is dead after being hit by a vehicle on State Highway 1 at Te Horo, near Otaki, tonight.

The crash happened about 5pm.

Inspector Paul Jermy, of police central communications, said traffic flow was heavy and police were asking motorists to exercise patience in the area - or to defer travel if possible. Delays were likely.

Both the cyclist and the vehicle were travelling north when the crash happened and the cyclist died at the scene.

"The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is currently being spoken to by police," Mr Jermy said.

Police were trying to keep the road open while a scene examination was carried out.
