KEY POINTS:
A female cyclist has died in Taupo, where the New Zealand Ironman event is taking place this weekend, although she was not involved in the event.
Two recreation cyclists were struck by a light truck at the intersection of Spa and Rotokawa roads about 9.20am.
The road was part of the Taupo Ironman course and it was thought the cyclists were race spectators.
When medics arrived they found one female dead at the scene. A male was taken to Taupo Hospital in a serious condition.
The driver of the truck was uninjured.
Police are still at the scene working out exactly what happened.
