Police are urging parents to make sure their children wear safety helmets while cycling after a 14-year-old boy was hit by a car in Lower Hutt yesterday, leaving him in a serious condition.
Senior Sergeant Scott Cooper said the cyclist was struck by a vehicle on Waiwhetu Road at 4.30pm. He was treated by ambulance at the scene and later airlifted to Wellington Hospital.
He is in a serious but stable condition.
Mr Cooper said the driver of the motor vehicle was spoken to at the scene, who was shaken but otherwise unharmed.
Police are still investigating the circumstances of this accident, but early indications show the cyclist was not wearing a bicycle helmet.
Senior Sergeant Cooper asked parents to reinforce safe bike riding habits to their children and urged motorist to take extra care over the holiday period.
Police are appealing anyone with information about the incident to contact the Lower Hutt Police Station on 560 2600.
