The capital's cops will soon cruise the city on mountain bikes but they are sticking to the flat central area.
They will be based in a newly enlarged station, housing 12 beat police, opened in the James Smith corner in Wellington city last week. It was enlarged and refitted with a $75,000 Wellington City Council grant.
Beat officers were homeless a year ago after their bosses decided to look for a new site. But when the lease expired and other options fell through, they moved back in.
The council has also funded four mountain bikes to help police patrol their patch from Wellington railway station to Kent Tce.
Inspector Marty Grenfell said the police presence had helped curb violence and disorder in the city.
