If you're thinking of cycling to work in the morning traffic peak, Friday may be your safest bet.
That is when the least crashes occurred, according to a Herald analysis of national statistics on bike crashes that caused death or injury from 2008 to 2012. The figures show 8am to 9am was the peak hour for crashes, with Thursdays standing out as the riskiest day: 120 crashes occurred in that hour on Thursdays during the five-year period.
Conversely Friday mornings were the safest week day, with 80 crashes. But commuter cyclists could lower their risks even further by taking a ride on Sundays, on which 24 prangs happened, the lowest tally, no doubt because of light traffic volumes.
Mid-week also posed the greatest risk of crashes in the evening.
Between 5pm and 6pm, the most crashes, 110, were on Thursdays, followed by Wednesdays on 103.
