A farm worker says it was "totally unacceptable" to find a 2.5cm screw in a Subway sandwich.
Ricky Taputu, of Rotorua, made the discovery after biting into a 15cm ham sub from the city's Koutu branch during a smoko with workmates.
The group, from Silver Fern Farms, were talking about a friend who had found a stone in a sausage.
"We were all having a good laugh when right at the end of my sandwich I heard a crunch and saw I had bitten into this screw," said Taputu.
He said the screw didn't cause any damage but it could have been a lot worse had a child eaten it.
"It's the first time this has happened to me, I find it totally unacceptable."
The store owner offered him vouchers but he said he would probably not eat there again.
Michelle Parry, who owns three Subway stores in Rotorua, said she took the matter very seriously.
"A small screw had come off the sandwich unit and had fallen into the tomatoes," she said.
"We have taken all of the screws out of that unit and I can assure the public it will never happen again."
