Gisborne police are interviewing a man who allegedly bashed a young mother with a crowbar while she was out jogging with her toddler in a pushchair yesterday morning.
The woman suffered moderate head injuries in the attack, but was able to escape and call for help on her cellphone.
The child was unharmed.
Senior Sergeant Maui Aben said it was too early to say whether the man would be charged and he was assisting police with their inquiries.
The attack took place at Kaiti Hill about 9am.
Officers using dogs found the man after about two hours. Mr Aben said any witnesses to the attack should contact the police.
