KEY POINTS:
A proposed crossing on a street in Remuera has upset residents, who say it will block the street and put children in danger.
Stirling St is a small cul-de-sac directly behind Victoria Ave School. A walkway at the end of the street leading into the school has caused traffic chaos as parents drop off and collect their children.
Calls to address the congestion problem were made to Auckland City Council last year.
A pram crossing - where the footpath kerb blends cleanly into the road on both sides - was proposed as the best solution to minimising traffic jams on the street.
But residents say that will do more harm than good, increasing the number of cars coming into the street and putting youngsters crossing the road at risk.
Resident Jenny Aston said because the street had a dead end, cars had to use driveways to turn around, at times jamming the street.
"The parents - they come in and they park on the footpath, they park in our driveways - rush off to get their children and it causes havoc," Mrs Aston said. "You have little children crossing and running across the street with all those cars around - there's still a possibility of knocking over a child."
Two access roads into the school on Victoria Ave were a better option for parents, another Stirling Rd resident said, as there was more road space to navigate.
Auckland City Council's road safety manager Karen Hay said the proposal was still at consultation stage, but other options - including a mini roundabout and a parking ban on the street - were not suitable, given the road's size.
A decision is to be made by February 9.
