Critically burnt woman dies overnight

A Palmerston North woman who was found critically injured with burns to most of her body has died.

The 37-year-old woman was rushed to Palmerston North Hospital after she was found outside her Parnell Heights home in Kelvin Grove with severe burns about 9.45am yesterday.

She was transferred to Middlemore Hospital in Auckland but died of her injuries about 1.30am today.

The woman was understood to have been on the phone to emergency services when firefighters arrived and doused her with water.

Detective Sergeant Dave Thompson today said nobody else was being sought in relation to her death.

"From our perspective any sort of criminal investigation has ceased, and the matter is going to go to the coroner," he said.

Police were fairly certain what had occurred but Mr Thompson would not go into details.

A scene examination found several areas of the house had suffered fire damage.

"There are patches of damage, but as to how that occurred there could be a number of explanations for that," he said.

Police would wrap up their investigation and assist the coroner with inquiries.
