Two people are being sought by police in relation to a PIN number scam.
Police want to identify a male and female who have succeeded in convincing employees at a small number of businesses around the Wellington CBD to give up PIN numbers from bank cards stolen from staff members.
Cash, wallets and other valuables have been stolen from staff-only areas by one person while the other diverts the attention of the staff member.
After the pair have left the premises, a phone call is placed to the store with one of the offenders claiming to be a bank representative asking for a PIN number to refund overcharging. The staff member is given the option to visit the bank in person or provide their PIN over the phone.
Police say three small business owners in the Wellington CBD have made reports, and CCTV captures of the alleged offenders have been made available.
It is believed that the pair first struck on Saturday, January 9. Police are warning the public not to give up their PIN numbers over the phone to anyone, and advise shop staff to pay attention to people's movements in their store when helping customers.
* Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to call the Wellington Police burglary squad on 381 2000.
