Mohammad Ashfaq Farooqi has been jailed for two years for tax evasion amounting to $1.1 million.
His sentence was handed down in the Hamilton District Court yesterday. He was granted leave to apply for home detention.
Farooqi, a Justice of the Peace, had pleaded guilty to 45 counts of evading GST and income tax payments between 1999 and 2006 as director of a suburban Four Square supermarket.
