KEY POINTS:
A man who according to a District Court judge was asking to go jail got his wish this week.
Kane Donald Stuart, 20, appeared in Christchurch District Court on Tuesday accused of dialling 111 to divert firefighters' attention so he and a friend could steal tarpaulins.
Stuart was remanded on bail to appear in Wellington District Court on April 4.
Judge Jane McMeeken told Stuart, who owes more than $20,000 in fines and reparation, that if she had her way, he would be given a sign reading "I want to go to jail" for his journey north.
Just a day later, that's exactly where he ended up.
Constable Michelle Stagg of Blenheim police said that after his court appearance, Stuart and a friend were hitchhiking in Amberley, north of Christchurch.
They were picked up by a man who offered them a bed for the night at his Hawarden home.
They then allegedly stole the man's car, some of his clothes and alcohol.
Stuart was arrested appeared in Blenheim District Court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody to appear in Rangiora District Court on March 26.
