KEY POINTS:
You have to wonder at the depths to which some lowlife descend. Baby killers are right down there in the pond scum, as are those who commit acts of violence against the elderly. Joining them shortly will be the morally bankrupt losers who stole more than 600 poppies, plus collection buckets and badges, from the Takapuna RSA's clubrooms.
Anzac Day is sacrosanct in this country. It's a time when we honour those young men and women who went to war not knowing whether they would return. Those who did make it home were expected to pick up where they'd left off and count themselves lucky. Their sacrifice showed a level of selflessness and community which is unimaginable today.
It is also unimaginable that someone would steal poppies designed to raise money for ex-servicemen and women and their families. The thieves knew what they were doing. They disabled a security camera and stole only the Anzac Day items.
Police fear they will try to pass themselves off as legitimate collectors. They've warned people not to give to anyone collecting door-to-door and to be wary of people collecting in areas where they haven't seen collectors before. They've suggested donating direct to the association this year.
I hope the thieves are caught and are made to spend time with the Army. Imagining the pain an outraged sergeant major could inflict on these weak and pathetic individuals is the only thing bringing me comfort.
