A tough line on crime has failed to boost National's ratings in the latest opinion poll, and new Act leader Rodney Hide has made little impact on his party's popularity.
National slipped one point to 43 per cent in the TVNZ Colmar Brunton poll broadcast last night. Labour also fell one to 39 per cent.
The poll of 1000 voters was taken last week, after National leader Don Brash promised a tougher line on crime, including more prisons and an end to parole for serious offences.
In preferred Prime Minister ratings, Dr Brash rose one to 32 per cent, with Prime Minister Helen Clark also up one, to 37 per cent.
The Maori Party, which got its first MP on Saturday as co-leader Tariana Turia easily won the Te Tai Hauauru byelection, had an unchanged 2 per cent support.
NZ First was up two to 5 per cent and the Green Party up one to 5 per cent.
Act made little ground, scoring 3 per cent, up just one point despite Mr Hide replacing Richard Prebble as party leader.
United Future remained unchanged on 2 per cent.
