KEY POINTS:
Police in Christchurch are investigating the arson of one cricket club and the burglary of another over the weekend.
Arsonists turned the 103-year-old St Albans Cricket Club pavilion in Hagley Park into a fiery inferno early on Saturday morning, setting fires in six places inside the wooden building.
Earlier that morning, the Old Boys Collegians cricket club just a few hundred metres away was broken into and left filled with gas from opened LPG cylinders, The Press reported.
Christchurch deputy chief fire officer Greg Crawford condemned the actions as "bloody stupid," particularly after the recent Tamahere fire in Waikato which claimed a firefighter's life in a blaze thought to have been caused by an LPG explosion.
