Wairarapa senior men's cricket selector Dick Kendall was delighted with the enthusiasm shown by players attending a coaching and training session at Rathkeale College last Sunday.
Up to a dozen players benefitted from the expert coaching of former New Zealand pace bowler Brendan Bracewell with several others apologising for their absence because of winter sporting commitments.
Kendall said those participating in the session were obviously keen to hone their skills before the start of the club season early next month
"You couldn't fault the enthusiasm of those who were there, they got stuck in right from the word go," Kendall said.
Form at that session and at a similar session being held this Sunday, again at Rathkeale College (starting at 10.30am), will play a big part in the naming of a Wairarapa squad for a "friendly" against Victoria University at Rathkeale on September 24.
Kendall is hoping for bigger numbers this Sunday and reiterated that any players with aspirations of representing Wairarapa in senior or age group cricket in 2006-07 were welcome to attend.
"Anybody who comes along will be given a fair chance to show what they have to offer. It's a two-hour session and that gives us time to see what the skill levels are," he said.
Meanwhile , another regular member of last season's Wairarapa senior men's team has indicated he will be playing his club cricket outside the Wairarapa this coming season.
Lansdowne top order batsman Sam Curtis has transferred to the Petone club and whether he will still be eligible to play for Wairarapa on the representative scene has yet to be confirmed.
Others from last year's side likely to be playing for Wellington-based clubs are John Peters and Hayden Spierling while Henry Cameron is in Gisborne, Richard Wylie in Manawatu and Ngatai Walker is heading overseas.
Kendall is taking a philosophical stance on the loss of so many of his players, saying that rather than dwell on their absence he is concentrating on discovering new talent to replace them.
"When players go the door is open for others to take their place and that's the challenge we have now," he said.
