Crest is not a competition - a student of any ability can succeed.
Crest is an awards scheme that assesses projects "on criteria which reflects a student's ability to demonstrate creativity in solving science and technology problems".
Usually science teachers in schools around NZ implement Crest projects.
But with the introduction of the technology curriculum in schools, projects are also coming from students who are working directly with business and industry.
A feature of the Crest awards is the use of a consultant on all projects.
The awards are structured by student year level:
First Crest/Team First Crest, Years 7-8: A team or individual award based on practical work.
Crest Bronze/Team Crest Bronze, Years 9-10: Awards for independent student projects.
Crest Silver/Team Crest Silver, Years 11-12: Advanced projects from students usually at this year level.
Crest Gold, Years 1-13: For advanced projects for students at this level.
The Crest Awards scheme is run by the Royal Society of New Zealand.
