A pedestrian died after being hit by a car near Porirua yesterday morning, taking the weekend road toll to two.
The 34-year-old Titahi Bay woman was hit on Titahi Bay Road about 2am, Porirua police Senior Sergeant Tony Smith told NZPA.
The car driver and other people stopped to give assistance, but Ropeta Tarisa Maiava died at the scene.
"Inquiries into the incident show the deceased may well have been walking on the road at the time of the crash," Mr Smith said.
The accident had been reported to the coroner for investigation.
The woman's partner was with her at the time of the accident, but was not struck by the car or injured.
