An Auckland City Hospital health professional had to be handcuffed to an ambulance stretcher after allegedly attacking a St John officer who was trying to treat his badly broken leg after a motorcycle accident.
Emergency services were called to the scene after the man's motorcycle and a car collided in Kohimarama Rd, St Heliers, at 5.19pm on Monday. Police say investigations into the accident and the alleged assault are under way and charges are pending.
The St John regional operations manager for the northern region, Gary Salmon, said the patient allegedly lashed out by using his good leg to kick the ambulance officer as he tried to help him.
"He was considerably aggressive and difficult to manage."
Mr Salmon said once the man was inside the ambulance, he became "difficult" again and police were called to get him to hospital.
It is believed blood samples were taken from the man at the hospital but the results will not be known for some weeks.
