An overseas driver was among three people injured in a head-on collision on Rimutaka Hill Rd yesterday.
The crash occurred near the summit at about 12pm, when a northbound car driven by the tourist collided with a vehicle heading towards Wellington.
Both drivers and one passenger, all in their 50s, suffered minor cuts and bruises. The wife of the tourist was admitted to Wairarapa Hospital with eye injuries. She was transferred to Wellington for specialist treatment.
Constable Jaco Pieterse said it appeared the German driver of the northbound car failed to return to the correct side of the road after being directed into the other lane for roadworks. It was a reminder to drivers, Mr Pieterse said. "Stick to the instructions - if you go through roadworks, take note of the signs."
The roadworks had been appropriately signposted, he said. Traffic on the hill was reduced to one lane for several hours after the crash.
