An alcohol-laden boy-racer car sped down a suburban street yesterday morning before losing control and hitting a tree, an eyewitness says.
The four people inside suffered only minor injuries in the crash, which left bottles of wine strewn across the grass outside the car in Mission Bay, Auckland.
The Subaru Legacy RS turbo crashed in Selwyn Ave just after 7am.
When resident Paul Johnston arrived, the car's lights were still on and the ambulance had just left the scene.
"It was horrific. I'm surprised anybody came out of the front seats alive."
He said the police told him the driver and all occupants had been drinking.
"They were all drunk," he said. "They were blotto. Absolutely blotto."
He estimated the car was travelling at more than 120 km/h to miss the corner and crash.
Police were intending to take blood samples from the driver in hospital. A spokesman said the car's occupants were taken to hospital with minor injuries. There were indications of alcohol consumption.
