A truck driver escaped serious injury after his vehicle struck and almost toppled a power pole in Masterton.
Fire communications supervisor Mike Wanoa said the truck collided with the concrete pole shortly after 5pm on Thursday and the driver had escaped unharmed. The truck was understood to be an Earthcarevehicle.
The steel-reinforced pole had been snapped on impact about 2m from the ground. It had been secured against toppling with a length of chain until Powerco workers removed and replaced the pole during an operation that forced a disruption of traffic for several hours yesterday.
Earthcare management could not be reached for comment.
