Power was cut to a large part of the Marlborough Sounds after an early morning car crash near in Waikawa, 5km northeast of Picton, early this morning.
Inspector Mark Booth, of police southern communications, said three people were in a car which hit a power pole in Beach Road, Waikawa, about 4.50am.
Power lines draped over the car trapped them until the Fire Service could disconnect the supply and get them out. They were not badly injured.
Power was cut to a large part of the Sounds for several hours but most customers were reconnected by 7am, a spokeswoman for Marlborough Lines said.
Those still without power were expected to be reconnected today.
