An ambulance spokesman said two cars collided head-on at about 5pm. People were trapped in at least one of the vehicles.
Five passengers were taken by ambulance to Wanganui Hospital.
One had sustained critical injuries, one had serious injuries, and three escaped with only minor injuries.
