KEY POINTS:
Firefighters used ladders to pump foam on to a burning straddle crane at the Ports of Auckland yesterday.
The crane driver noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment and tried to fight the fire before raising the alarm, fire safety officer Russell Dickson said.
The crane engine was about 20m off the ground and could only be reached by ladder.
He said another crane would be used to get fire safety officers to the site to investigate.
