A crane is being used to clear a serious crash south of Porirua.
A truck and trailer unit carrying chemicals and general goods has rolled and blocked southland lanes on State Highway 1, south of Porirua, causing major traffic delays.
The Fire Service said there were no reports of ruptures or spillages, but that couldn't be confirmed until the truck was put back on its wheels and goods checked.
About 24 firefighters were working on the clean-up. The Fire Service said it had two trucks set up for decontamination and two trucks for foam protection and water supply.
Numerous "non-dangerous" packages were currently scattered on the highway.
Police were at the scene and diversions in place, diverting southbound traffic through the suburb of Tawa.
Police are advising motorists to avoid the area as there are extensive delays.
A fire spokesman says they have to use a crane to lift the truck's containers out of the way as they contain a range of chemicals.
He says there's no danger to surrounding areas but it will take several hours to clear the scene.
SH1 is expected to reopen around midday.
