KEY POINTS:
Cracks have been found in a Gisborne reservoir following last December's earthquake.
Gisborne District Council was told last week the Hospital Hill reservoir was not considered to be in danger of failing, but repair work would be needed to prevent accelerated corrosion in the cracks over the next 10 to 15 years, the Gisborne Herald reported.
Council utilities engineer Marcus Koll said it was suspected the reservoir's vertical steel columns moved and the resultant cracks did not close when the earthquake finished.
No damage was found in the city's other reservoirs,
The quake, which measured 6.8 on the Richter scale struck on December 20, causing millions of dollars of damage to many buildings.
Some building were seconds from collapse when the quake stopped, engineers reported last week.
Earthquake Commission insurance manager Lance Dixon said $13.5 million had been paid out to claimants so far.
About 1500 of 6116 claimants remained to be settled. The commission was confident of meeting its target of paying 80 to 85 per cent of claimants by June 20, he said.
