Christchurch Polytechnic (CPIT) teachers, unhappy at being asked to teach more hours and give up leave to make up time lost following the earthquakes, are considering taking industrial action.
"Staff at CPIT are already giving their all, including working long hours and extra days to help students through the aftermath of the earthquakes," Tertiary Education Union (TEU) advocate Kris Smith said today.
"Students are not asking for more classes over more days and hours, so why is the polytechnic trying to make its staff work these longer hours?"
Ms Smith said that longer hours and less meant more workplace stress and unfair pressure on quality education.
She said that TEU members at CPIT would hold a stop-work meeting on Monday to announce the result of an industrial action ballot taken in response to the proposed increase in workload.
