WELLINGTON - Two police officers were taken to hospital following an attack yesterday by the occupants of a car stopped on State Highway 1, south of Tawa.
A male officer was hit over the head with a lump of wood and knocked unconscious, and his female companion was pushed on to the motorway and suffered knee injuries.
Wellington district police communications manager Kaye Calder said the male had since regained consciousness but the extent of his injuries was unknown. Both officers had been taken to hospital.
Wellington district police commander Superintendent John Kelly said the officers should be okay.
"Both are conscious but obviously shocked by what has happened.
"It was a vicious, cowardly attack and illustrates the sort of dangers police staff face."
The attack happened while the officers were checking cars heading north following an armed robbery of the Bank of New Zealand in the southern suburb of Kilbirnie about 2.30 pm.
The offenders ran away after the attack.
