A 51-year-old man was flown to hospital with chest injuries after a cow, which objected to being taken to the meatworks, charged at him while he was loading it onto a truck in Upper Hutt today.
The man, from Martinborough, was attempting to load the 600kg cow on to a truck in Whitemans Valley when it charged and struck him in his chest "with enough force to partially bend the fence behind him," Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokesman Dave Greenberg said.
"Apparently the cow resisted being loaded onto a truck which would take it off to the meat works," Mr Greenberg said.
He said the man was airlifted to Wellington Hospital where he was being treated for non-life threatening chest injuries.
Meanwhile, the cow remains in its paddock to enjoy an extra day or two before being taken to the meatworks.
