A drunk man who robbed an 89-year-old woman in a Christchurch supermarket carpark felt so bad afterwards that he helped police recover her purse, a court was told today.
Kenneth Hunter Georgeson left the woman sprawling on the ground as he made his getaway on a bike after snatching her purse, Christchurch District Court was told.
The woman sustained grazing and bruises to her chin, knees, head, and hand.
Sergeant Ross Unwin told the court Georgeson, who admitted robbery, said afterwards he felt bad about the robbery in the Sydenham Countdown carpark last Friday, and had not realised the woman's age.
He was drunk and approached the woman as she was loading groceries into her car.
He tried to grab her purse but she held on, eventually falling down as he made off on his bicycle, with the purse.
He later helped police to recover the purse, but he had already spent the $65 it contained on buying alcohol.
Judge Stephen Erber remanded him in custody for sentencing on December 7, and ordered that other charges on which he was already awaiting sentence be dealt with on the same day.
