Court date follows teen crash

A car crash involving the teenage daughter of former sports star Matthew Ridge and his ex-wife Sally has landed the girl's boyfriend in court.

Benjamin Calvert, 17, has been charged with careless driving, after crashing his mother's 4WD in Tauranga.

His girlfriend, Jaime Ridge, 16, was a passenger.

Calvert appeared in the Tauranga District Court on Tuesday and will reappear in September.

Jaime had been visiting Calvert at his mother's Mt Maunganui home on the weekend of the June 26 crash.

Calvert and Ridge were uninjured.

Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said there may have been a "number of factors" contributing to the accident. He could not comment further as the matter is currently before the court.

Matthew Ridge also declined to comment on the crash.
