A man has appeared in court this morning charged with assault after a woman was found dead in a Balclutha home yesterday.
The 49-year-old was remanded without plea after appearing in Dunedin District Court in relation to the death of the 41-year-old woman.
The Essex St property remains cordoned off and forensic specialists from Christchurch ESR arrived today to help with the scene examination, which is likely to continue for most of the day.
Other residents of the house were being cared for by family members, Detective Sergeant Chris Henderson said.
About 20 police staff from Dunedin and Balclutha are working on the inquiry.
