A drug courier who travelled from Auckland to Christchurch with 226g of methamphetamine worth more than $200,000 was jailed for three years today.
Justice John Fogarty, in the High Court at Christchurch, said Yuhao Sun had been arrested after the police's Operation Tsunami surveillance.
Sun pleaded guilty to a charge of supplying the class A drug methamphetamine, an offence which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
He said Sun had a privileged background and still had the support of his family who wanted him "to learn from this, take his punishment and still lead a fruitful life".
Defence counsel Jonathan Eaton said Sun had not been a key player in the crime ring and had made no money out of his involvement. He was one of two men travelling with the drugs.
The 20-year-old, a visitor to New Zealand, wanted to remain in the country but would be deported as soon as he had served his sentence.
