The Elder Trophy was at stake in last Saturday's competition at Carterton.
This trophy is a four ball, better ball, mixed, stableford event played over a single round of eighteen holes.
Married couples had a mortgage on the first three places with the winners of the trophy, Ian and Beth Gordon, scoring a very good 49 points.
Even so, they just pipped Pat and Shirley Carew by a single point with John and Sue Braiden a further point in arrears.
Bill Shakespeare and Lesley Sadler filled fourth slot with 45 points but only on countback from Simon Diplock and Marion Matheson.
The sixth, and final, prize for the event went to the pairing of Russ Morgan and Alison Murrell with their total of 43 points.
The competition for those men who did not have partners for the trophy event was also hard fought.
The winner was Chris Ranish whose 41 point total edged out David Ross on countback with Chris completing the second nine with 24 points compared with David's 20.
Both Tony McCarthy and David Sadler scored 40 points, Tony winning third place on countback.
Stu Ingham was on his own with 39, with both Mike Newport and Alistair Smith scoring 38.
Dean Schaef was the lucky player - from four others - to win the last prize with his 37 point total.
The Marquis of Normanby Hotel Men's Nearest the Pin contest was won by Dean Schaef and the nearest the pin contest for the women went to Lesley Sadler.
"All Teed Up" balls were won by Trevor Clayton and Lesley Sadler while four players - Lyn Evans, Anne Brewer, Russ Sadler and Simon Diplock - scored holes in two with Simon achieving two of them.
SUNDAY:
There was no competitive play on Sunday.
VETERANS - TUESDAY:
On Tuesday, August 2, the veterans played a stableford round in which Mike Newport took the honours with 41 points.
Mike was just one point ahead of John Lett with Russ Sadler in third place with 39.
Both Hugh Rolls and Matt Casey scored 37's, Garry Smith and Pat Carew 36's and Chris Connor and Cyril Burling 35's
WOMEN - WEDNESDAY:
On Wednesday, July 27, the women of the club played an L.G.U. round in which Nadine Jansen returned the outstanding score of the day - 66 nett - winning the silver division in the process.
Second in that division was Vicki Bain with a meritorious 68 nett.
Competition in the bronze division was fierce with no less that three players returning scores of 68 nett.
Judy Wright got the nod from Val Willis with Shirley Carew in third place. Both Mary Edwards and Sue Ross compiled scores of 69 nett with Kate Keen on 71 and Colleen Southey on 72.
Nearest the pin contests, in three divisions, were won by Nadine Jansen, Caral Rink and Pauline Craig while the "All Teed Up" ball for the day was won by Vicki Bain.
"The Lodge Restaurant" accuracy shots were won by Bev Tregurtha, in the lower handicap group, and by Judy Wright, in the higher group.
Holes in two were achieved by Corrie van Zanten and Marge Robson.
FOOTNOTE:
The veterans close result on Tuesday in which John Lett was beaten by a single point by Mike Newport had an interesting background.
The veterans are competing for a steadily increasing amount in grocery vouchers each Tuesday.
The catch is that, to win the vouchers, a player has to beat the field on two consecutive Tuesdays.
John had won the day on the previous Tuesday and was thus in the hot seat last Tuesday. Mike Newport was playing in the same four.
Mike just managed to prevent John from claiming the pool but, of course, Mike will be in the hot seat next Tuesday.
These type of events do add interest to the day and Veterans Captain, Ray White, is to be congratulated on his innovations.
