A Napier couple, who got into trouble when strong winds pushed their boat near rocks on Lake Taupo, were rescued by helicopter overnight.
The couple were anchored for the night when their anchor came loose in easterly winds, forcing them to make a mayday call, Radio New Zealand reported.
Coastguard discovered the pair wet and cold on a beach but rescuers could not get close enough to them in the rough conditions, RNZ reported.
The pair were rescued just after 3am by Greenlea Rescue Helicopter.
