An Auckland couple who lost virtually everything in a lengthy battle with the IRD will receive $550,000 in compensation.
Jan and Murray Willis were forced to pay more than $100,000 in ACC levies after a botch-up with the IRD, but lost more than $250,000 in total.
Their 14-year battle with the department was brought to the attention of a parliamentary select committee late last year, after which the Government instructed the IRD and ACC to split the cost of compensating the couple.
Revenue Minister Michael Cullen says he is pleased a satisfactory agreement has been reached.
He says the $550,000 settlement is appropriate and recognises the reality of the complex issues involved in the case.
