Police are praising a couple who came to the aid of a woman who was sexually assaulted in central Hamilton this morning.
Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton said the couple came across a woman in a distressed state shortly before 7am.
They called emergency services and stayed with the her until officers arrived.
"Very little is known about what has occurred at this point given the priority right now is to ensure the victim gets the appropriate treatment and support she needs,'' Mr Thornton said in a statement.
Part of the street was cordoned off for a forensic examination and police hoped to interview the victim later today.
