KEY POINTS:
Police have charged a couple with seriously assaulting their 17-week-old baby boy, who has been left suffering brain damage after the alleged attack.
A 30-year-old man and his 21-year-old partner were due to appear in the Nelson District Court this afternoon charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and failing to supply the necessaries of life.
The assault allegedly took place on or about Labour Day.
The baby boy was initially taken to Nelson Hospital in a critical condition before being transferred to Auckland's Starship Hospital.
He is now out of hospital, and has been removed from the couple's care.
