A man and a woman have appeared in court this afternoon charged with kidnapping a 5-day-old baby from Middlemore Hospital's maternity unit last night.
Faatiga Joe Manutui, 31, and a 26-year-old woman, who was granted interim name suppression, appeared before Manukau District Court charged with unlawfully taking the child with intent to cause her to be confined.
The baby was allegedly taken as the mother had a shower and staff were busy.
They were allegedly able to circumvent security that had been beefed up only two years ago after another baby abduction.
The baby girl was found at a Manurewa property about 4am, safe and well, and was reunited with her parents.
