Police have advised retailers to be on the lookout for counterfeit notes after a man tried to use a fake $100 bill at a Wellington convenience store early yesterday.
The 21-year-old man and two other men, aged 18 and 26, were arrested following the incident and charged with possession of forged bank notes.
One of the men was said to have had control of 41 forged $100 notes, Radio New Zealand reported.
Two of the men were also charged with related fraud charges.
They appeared in Wellington District Court yesterday and were granted bail, with two men bailed to Auckland and the third to Taranaki.
Detective Sergeant Martin Todd said the men had driven from Auckland to Wellington, and police were checking with their Tauranga colleagues to see whether fake notes reported in Tauranga yesterday were related.
Mr Todd said the notes were of a reasonable standard, but differed in colour and texture to legal tender.
It was not yet known who had created the notes.
He warned retailers in Wellington about accepting large notes for small transactions, and to contact police if they came across fake notes.
The trio would reappear in Wellington District Court next month.
