The Government is to reduce the Christchurch City Council's role in the rebuild of the central city, according to reports.
Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee is to make an announcement on the CBD rebuild at 10.30am today.
Radio New Zealand understands the Government will set up an advisory board to oversee the rebuild, and will be responsible for putting the central city plan into action.
The council will take a secondary role.
The advisory board will have six members - lead by a "high profile person" and will operate within CERA, RNZ reported. It was not known whether the board would be able to overrule council decisions on city planning and resource consent.
Councillors were briefed on the plans yesterday, and business leaders would be given a rundown this morning.
